Cartography and topography

I’m still working on getting a proper map with the exact delineation of the appellation but the below Google map shows the general area where COF is located. The majority of production is centered around Cividale del Friuli (where the producers association is located) and the appellation extends north in a narrow strip aligned with the pre-Alps. But, more importantly, the relief map below shows the violent jump in elevation at the foot of the Carnic and Julian Alps.

This unique geographic formation creates an intense and often violent wind corridor. Did you know that there are handrails in parts of Trieste that help pedestrians negotiate the winds when they get too strong? While cold air arrives from the Alps, warmer air can arrive from the Adriatic, creating a series of macroclimates that can be warmer or cooler depending on the position.

  1. I’m a winemaker who is also pretty serious about digital maps. I’ll add your blog to my RSS feed, but I’d love it if you could email me about mapmaking. Maybe we can share tips. :)

    Best,
    Ryan.

  2. Dottore:
Such a great post (and of course marvelously entertaining), with the promise of many more to come. I anticipate some great reading (and vicarious tasting) during the COF bloggers tour.
Perhaps will see some of you in NYC during Italian Wine Week.
    Felice Anno Nuovo.
    Dave…
